Hinckley Allen Attorney Thomas J. Farrell Recognized with The Honorable Anthony V. DeMayo Pro Bono Award

Hinckley Allen is pleased to announce that Thomas J. Farrell, has been honored by the Connecticut Bar Association (CBA) as a 2018 recipient of the Honorable Anthony V. DeMayo Pro Bono Award for his volunteer work in the legal community. Tom was selected for this award based on his demonstrated dedication to the provision of legal services to those in need without expectation of payment. This award reflects Tom’s desire to ensure members of his community have access to legal representation and equal opportunity.

Tom’s pro bono work focuses on consumer bankruptcies and representation of tenants in Housing Court proceedings. His pro bono clients are typically those who are in need, some of whom suffer from mental health issues and other disabilities, creating additional obstacles in navigating the legal system.

In particular, the Veterans Center referred two complex cases to Tom in 2017 for veterans who were threatened with imminent eviction and homelessness. Both cases required assertion of legal defenses as well as considerable effort with the clients to access social services and secure new housing. In each case, the client was able to secure new housing before the eviction actions were completed. Hear directly from Tom’s clients about how his work impacted them in this video.

Named in honor of the late Judge Anthony V. DeMayo (1924-2012), who tirelessly fought for fundamental fairness and championed the legal rights of the poor and accused, the award recognizes CBA members who are not salaried employees of a legal aid or similar nonprofit organization. This award will be presented at the CBA’s annual “Celebrate with the Stars” awards ceremony. To learn more about the CBA, please visit www.ctbar.org.

We applaud Tom’s efforts and dedication to his community and those in need.
