Preserving a University’s Legacy and Mission

An increasing number of colleges and universities are struggling with declining student enrollment, decreased government funding, and increased competition and costs. The team at Hinckley Allen assists higher education clients in finding creative solutions to these challenges.

Hinckley Allen represented the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut in connection with the transfer of its educational programs and assets to an affiliate of Goodwin University, alleviating the University’s financial difficulties and preserving the institution’s nearly 100-year legacy and mission.

A highly collaborative team across multiple practices at the Firm led the University through the transaction, which included debt restructuring, negotiation of two asset purchase transactions, the transfer of dozens of parcels of real estate, and working with co-counsel to secure the required regulatory and accreditation approvals from the state and the federal Department of Education
