Hinckley Allen is proud to announce that two of its attorneys have been named to the 2025 Rhode Island Lawyers Weekly Excellence in the Law list. Litigation Chair Gerald J. Petros has been honored for the third time as Lawyer of the Year, and Kat B. Savage has been named an Up & Coming Lawyer, underscoring the firm’s continued leadership in the legal profession and commitment to excellence across generations.
As Chair of the firm’s Litigation Group and leader of its Environmental Group, Jerry has built a strong reputation for handling complex commercial, environmental, and energy-related litigation. He regularly represents utilities, renewable energy developers, financial institutions, and manufacturers in matters ranging from regulatory and permitting issues to high-stakes litigation in state and federal courts. This prestigious honor recognizes Jerry’s outstanding achievements in law throughout 2024, most notably his involvement in Hinckley Allen’s recent victory in the landmark case of Roth v. State of Rhode Island. In Roth v. State of Rhode Island, Jerry successfully challenged the constitutionality of newly enacted state legislation that significantly diminished the rights of property owners along the Rhode Island shoreline. As a member of the Litigation Practice Group, Kat focuses on energy and environmental regulatory law, advising clients on permitting, land use, and complex commercial disputes. She has argued before the Rhode Island Supreme Court and recently took on a leadership role as Vice Chair of Programming for the American Bar Association’s Section on Energy, Environment, and Resources. In addition to her legal practice, Kat is a committed public servant, contributing numerous hours of pro bono work this year and serving as a Commissioner on the Rhode Island Commission on Judicial Tenure and Discipline.
The Rhode Island Lawyers Weekly Excellence in the Law awards recognize the state’s most influential attorneys and legal professionals for their impact, leadership, and contributions to the legal community. Jerry and Kat will be formally recognized at the Rhode Island Lawyers Weekly Excellence in the Law Awards event on June 3, 2025.
