Patent Prosecution & Counseling Co-Chair Stephen J. Holmes Recognized by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly as a Go To Lawyer for Intellectual Property

Hinckley Allen is pleased to announce that Partner Stephen J. Holmes has been named a 2025 “Go To Lawyer” for Intellectual Property by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly.

Recognized for his advanced technical knowledge and breadth of experience, Stephen focuses his practice on patent and trademark prosecution for corporate research and development clients, representing a range of companies from startups to Fortune 500 corporations.

Over his 35-year career, Stephen has managed high-value matters, including developing a patent portfolio for Whalen Furniture that led to successful litigation and licensing, ultimately protecting products that generated nearly $1 billion in revenue over 15 years. He has also recently advised on high-stakes matters involving government-backed hydrogen technology and pistol-mounted lighting devices currently in litigation.

At Hinckley Allen, Stephen co-chairs the Patent Prosecution & Counseling Practice. He is actively involved in several professional organizations, including the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the Boston Intellectual Property Law Association, and the International Trademark Association, and is admitted to practice in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, multiple federal courts, and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

“Over the course of my career, I’ve had the privilege of working with innovators across industries and technologies, from startups bringing their first ideas to market to global companies with extensive portfolios,” said Holmes. “What drives me is the opportunity to understand each client’s business, their goals, and the challenges they face, and then craft strategies that protect and strengthen their competitive position. Intellectual property law is never static; it’s constantly evolving alongside technology, and that’s what makes the work both challenging and deeply rewarding.”

Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly’s “Go To Lawyers” program recognizes leading attorneys across the Commonwealth who possess a deep understanding of their area of law, a track record of success, the respect of their peers, and a commitment to achieving the best results for clients.

Hinckley Allen’s Intellectual Property practice is recognized among the nation’s leading IP teams, earning distinctions in Managing IP’s 2025 IP Stars and Chambers USA 2025: Intellectual Property. In an era where the rapid exchange of ideas and technology heightens the risk of unauthorized use, the firm’s IP attorneys provide strategic counseling to protect, develop, manage, leverage, and enforce intellectual property rights and assets. They work with clients ranging from individual entrepreneurs to multinational corporations with complex portfolios, delivering pragmatic, business-focused strategies that draw on the multi-disciplinary resources of a full-service law firm. The team collaborates across practice areas to handle matters such as IP-driven corporate transactions, portfolio assessments, due diligence, licensing, and technology transfers, achieving targeted solutions and favorable results for clients both in the U.S. and globally.
