In Memorium (1950 -2025)
Paul joined Hinckley Allen in 1975 as an associate after graduating from Harvard University and Boston University Law School. He became a partner in 1981 and, over the next 50 years, devoted his professional life to the firm and to his clients. A brilliant and compassionate attorney, Paul was recognized as one of New England’s foremost Trusts and Estates lawyers.
His practice was centered on trust and estate planning and administration, with additional focus on personal income tax and legal matters impacting individuals. Paul had deep expertise in charitable gift planning and the representation of tax-exempt organizations, serving both institutions and donors with distinction. He was highly regarded for his meticulous drafting of wills and trusts, post-mortem tax planning, and his skill in managing complex valuation issues involving real estate and closely held businesses.
Paul counseled a wide range of clients — from high-net-worth individuals and business owners to multi-generational families — and frequently represented trust departments at major financial institutions. He was also a seasoned advisor on legal issues related to trust and estate litigation.
Throughout his distinguished career, Paul received numerous accolades, including recognition by Best Lawyers in America® (2016, 2018–2025), where he was named Lawyer of the Year in 2017 for Non-Profit/Charities Law and Trusts and Estates. He was also listed in Chambers High Net Worth (2019–2024) and Chambers USA for Private Wealth Law, and was consistently honored as a Super Lawyer in Rhode Island (2005–2018). In 2010, he received the Harold B. Soloveitzik Professional Leadership Award from The Rhode Island Foundation.
Paul was deeply committed to civic and charitable work. He served on the boards and committees of numerous organizations, including Camp Ruggles, Moses Brown School, the Providence Ronald McDonald House, Temple Beth-El, and The Providence Athenaeum.
He was a respected member of the legal community, actively involved in the American Bar Association, the Rhode Island Bar Association, the Estate Planning Council of Rhode Island, and several other professional organizations. He was admitted to the bars of Rhode Island (1975) and Massachusetts (1985).
Above all, Paul will be remembered for his intellect, integrity, and the deep care he showed clients, colleagues, and his community. His presence, wisdom, and friendship will be profoundly missed.
Our deepest condolences go out to Paul’s family, friends, and loved ones. We are grateful for his many contributions and honored to have shared in his remarkable life and career.
