Hinckley Allen Facilitates Successful Merger between Rhode Island PBS and The Public’s Radio

Hinckley Allen was pleased to play a lead role in facilitating the merger between Rhode Island PBS (RI PBS) and The Public’s Radio (TPR). This transaction brings together two locally-owned and highly trusted news sources, creating an integrated multimedia, multiplatform entity, known as the Rhode Island PBS Foundation and The Public’s Radio, that will continue to enhance Rhode Island’s access to independent, public media for years to come. PBS and NPR are among the most trusted media institutions in America and this merger in our local market will provide an excellent value to Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts.

RI PBS and TPR, both recognized for their credibility and diverse programming, embarked on a merger to enhance their collective impact on the community. RI PBS, with its unique focus on local storytelling and differentiated programming, possesses a weekly 60-minute news magazine show, “RI PBS Weekly,” along with award-winning documentaries and engaging series like “Hi Neighbor” And “Chasing Silver.” TPR, an award-winning, trusted radio source and local NPR affiliate, provides essential public resources for quality journalism and compelling storytelling that informs, educates, and inspires the community. The merger addresses a significant gap in the state’s media landscape: RI PBS and TPR, unlike other local stations owned by out-of-state entities, is now the only locally-owned and operated news organization in Rhode Island, with both radio and TV platforms, complemented by a strategic partnership with a print partner.

The merger process required understanding the complex regulatory landscape surrounding broadcasting and public media. Hinckley Allen, as a local law firm deeply rooted in Rhode Island, brought its expertise to navigate the complex legal hurdles to closing this transaction, including regulatory approval by the Rhode Island Attorney General. The combined entity will have nearly 100 employees and an expanded capacity to produce public interest reporting across households in Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts.
