Veteran Patent Attorneys, Stephen J. Holmes and David R. Josephs Join Hinckley Allen’s Corporate & Business Practice Group


Hinckley Allen is pleased to announce that Stephen J. Holmes and David R. Josephs have joined the firm as partners in the Corporate & Business Practice Group. The veteran patent attorneys join the firm from Barlow, Josephs & Holmes, Ltd., one of the oldest intellectual property law firms in the United States.

Stephen Holmes and David Josephs specialize in patent, trademark, and copyright prosecution, as well as administrative proceedings before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), and litigation support. “We are thrilled to have Steve and Dave join the firm. Steve’s practice focuses on patent and trademark prosecution, as well as counseling clients ranging in size from sole proprietorships to Fortune 500 corporations. He also has significant litigation experience providing critical support for litigation counsel during fact and expert discovery, Markman hearings, and trial. He also has experience with post-grant proceedings, including reissue applications, Inter Partes Reexaminations, and interferences.

With a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Tufts University and a law degree from the University of New Hampshire Law School, Steve utilizes his technical knowledge when prosecuting cases in fiber optic lasers and amplifiers, rare-earth doped fibers, fiber optic telecommunication modules, LED lighting devices, vertical cavity lasers, collision avoidance and ranging systems for drone aircraft, anti-counterfeiting technologies for currency, aerosol and liquid dispensing closures, ready to assemble furniture, automotive and industrial filter components and knitted wire mesh products. As a trademark attorney, Steve works with clients to build and maintain international and domestic trademark portfolios, as well as to protect the intellectual property of the organization. Recognized for his success, Steve has been recognized as one of The Best Lawyers in America® since 2009, named Lawyer of the Year in 2014, 2016, 2022, and 2023. He has also been selected by Super Lawyers® for Intellectual Property in Rhode Island since 2011.

Dave’s practice focuses on trademark and patent prosecution. His extensive knowledge of technical fields such as aircraft turbine engines, computer software and hardware, and thermal management solutions, allows him to assist clients in evaluating the patents of competitors to provide freedom to operate, patent infringement, and validity opinions. Clients also seek Dave’s counsel on evaluating and clearing their trademarks, protecting them both domestically and internationally.

Dave earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Union College and a law degree from The John Marshall Law School (now the University of Illinois Chicago). He counsels companies managing and protecting their intellectual property. Dave also has first-hand experience with the patenting process, having worked as a patent examiner for the USPTO concentrating in semiconductor devices prior to beginning in private practice. With a reputation for success in intellectual property, he has been recognized as one of The Best Lawyers in America® since 2007 and named Lawyer of the Year in 2014, 2016, 2022, and 2023. Dave was also recognized by Super Lawyers® for Intellectual Property in Rhode Island in 2022 and from 2008-2019. Dave will be based in our Providence office.
